A BOUTIQUE MAISON DE PLUME & EGG ATELIER

Rooted in reverence for heritage and beauty, we steward each breed to its finest expression and enrich our eggs with uncommon quality. Our breeding flock includes Marans, Multi-Generational Olive Eggers, Swedish Flowers, and Ameraucanas, with occasional limited edition breeds.

HONORING THE STANDARD OF PERFECTION

What started out as a simple plan to keep four chickens on a fledgling homestead has turned into a passion, a business, a family, and a purpose. We never saw ourselves in our wildest dreams creating a breeding program and egg business, but now we can't imagine doing anything else.

Our principles and mission are very simple: Create a lasting legacy of beautiful birds, a sustainable environment in which they can flourish, and an elevated health product for our own nutritional and longevity needs. Get to know more about Little Chicken Farms below and how our passion for the original "Golden Girls" led to a life-long purpose.

OUR STORY

Little Gerald and Mommy

When my youngest son, Tyler, left for college, life shifted in ways I hadn’t quite expected. After years of building a life around my family, the house felt suddenly quiet. I had always imagined starting a small homestead when I bought this place, and now felt like the perfect time to finally do it. So, I rolled up my sleeves and got to work.

I started with a garden — picture It’s Complicated, but on a more modest budget and with a lot more trial and error. It was beautiful, chaotic, and humbling all at once. And when the garden alone wasn’t enough to keep my hands (or my heart) busy, I decided to add a few chickens. Four, to be exact — Dorothy, Blanche, Rose, and Sophia. 'Only four', I promised myself.

Of course, anyone who has ever kept chickens knows that "chicken math” is real, and it wasn't long before I was adding to my "only four." But what really surprised me was how deeply these animals impacted me. I had spent years pouring myself into work and family, often forgetting to nurture my own joy.

These funny, curious, affectionate creatures changed that. Every day I spent with them brought a little more light back into my life. Their rhythms grounded me, their personalities delighted me, and their quiet companionship reminded me of something I had forgotten - how good it feels to truly care for something that gives back so much in return.

What began as four backyard hens turned into a small passion project, and that passion quickly grew into something much bigger. Before long, I was studying genetics, learning to incubate, and raising breed after breed in search of the perfect balance of beauty, temperament, and productivity. The more I learned, the more I wanted to contribute - not just to my own flock, but to the legacy of poultry breeding itself.

Today, Little Chicken Farms is the result of that journey. What started as a healing hobby has become a thriving, purpose-driven farm dedicated to breeding exceptional chickens with care, science, and respect. At Little Chicken Farms, we are committed to preserving and improving breed standards through selective breeding and responsible husbandry. Every bird that crosses into this realm is loved and treasured beyond measure. We aim to set the gold standard in care for our birds, without exception. You will see this in the way we lovingly and proudly share our birds' environments and daily interactions.

From 16 weeks of age, our flocks are 100% organic-fed, pasture-raised, and GMO-, corn-, and soy-free. We prioritize temperament, conformation, and genetics - focusing on traits that make each breed both a joy to raise and a contribution to its lineage. We are proud members of the American Poultry Association, the Marans Club (U.S. and France), the Ameraucana Breeders Club, and the Breeding Academy, where we hold Grand Master status.

Little Chicken Farms is more than a farm - it’s a story of rediscovery, of finding beauty and purpose in the everyday. It’s proof that sometimes, the smallest things - a feathered friend, a quiet morning in the garden, a freshly laid egg - can change your life completely.

OUR GUIDING PRINCIPLES

Our breeding program is a careful blend of heritage preservation, scientific precision, and ethical animal husbandry. Every pairing is intentionally selected not only for its alignment with the Standard of Perfection, but also for temperament, vigor, and the expression of desirable traits - from rich, saturated egg color to consistent feather pattern, body structure, and overall conformation. We believe that beauty without substance is hollow, which is why we breed with both the eye of an artist and the discipline of a geneticist.

We use a multi-generational tracking system to analyze lineage, performance, and expression across our flocks. Our participation in the Breeding Academy and heritage clubs keeps our program aligned with evolving standards and community expertise.

We invest in DNA testing to help us uncover both desirable and recessive traits, including eggshell pigment deposition, feather color genes, and even behavioral markers, allowing us to make informed decisions that go beyond surface-level selection. This scientific approach ensures that each generation we raise is a step forward in both form and function.

At its core, our breeding philosophy is about honoring the integrity of each breed while building toward its best expression - not just for today but for the legacy we leave behind.

OUR EGG
ATELIER

We like to think of our eggs as haute cuisine as we strive to create the most delicious and nutritious egg in the market today. It's no secret that eggs are one of the most nutrient-dense foods you can eat, but did you know that a hen's diet, genetics, and environment can directly impact the quality and taste of her eggs?

There are certain standards by which a hen's diet is measured, and what we know as the gold standard today - all organic, corn and soy-free, and on pasture is a bar we have enthusiastically challenged ourselves to raise.

Our feed practices use the gold standard as a non-negotiable. We then build upon that to include feed and amendments that directly and measurably impact our girls' health, genetic expression, immunity, and longevity. The consequence is a healthy, vibrant, happy flock with absolutely delicious eggs. Our nutrition is backed by science and data, and we are proud to offer this essential food to our loyal customers.

We do not make a profit on our consumables. In fact, we lose money. But we believe the mission of maximizing flavor and nutritional value is an investment worth making. Currently, our eggs are only available for purchase through private resellers and specialty produce stores in California.

As a small, boutique egg atelier, we will likely never have a large enough operation to fulfill high-volume, cross-state orders, and that is by design.

By keeping a small, manageable flock, we maintain the integrity of how our girls are raised and loved and that is something we will never compromise.
